Think Twice Before You Place That Call
I realize this veers from what may be the original intention of this blog but an interesting and startling article from Rense.com fell into my lap the other day that I thought might bear noting. In a discussion regarding cell phones (and by extension, RFID chips) the author, William Thomas, brings up some rather pointed criticisms (backed up with reams of data and expert testimonials) of how new technologies may be very harmful to our health, without our even knowing.
He writes, "Mesmerized by magical gadgets, we have yet to count the costs of miniature radio transmitters that are transforming Marconi s invention into new possibilities for portable personal pollution...Silicon sensors are already calling to each other. Soon, countless communicating microchips embedded in everything from bumpers to brooms will be sending streams of encoded electrical energy through glass, steel, concrete, bone and flesh. Exquisitely sensitive to subtle electromagnetic harmonies, human brains and bodies as intricate as galaxies depend on tiny electrical impulses to conduct complex life-processes -including the ability to read, recall and respond to these words. Acting as antennas, our anatomies just as easily tune into spurious signals from radio and microwave transmissions. Blake Levitt, author of Electromagnetic Fields, says that when it comes to cell phones, a worse frequency could not have been chosen for the human anatomy."
As someone who uses his cell phone every day, this entire piece has forced me to rethink my current wireless lifestyle. What a dilemma.

I am wireless as I read this! I am using my computer using a USB wireless adapter. Definately something to think about.

Also, this is definately a worthy greenthinkers discussion topic! A healthy mind and body goes hand-in-hand with a healthy lifestyle and environment.

It seems like this issue is hitting the mass media. Wired (Magazine) News writes, "With mobile phones now as ubiquitous as their land-line counterparts, few people worry about the potential health risks associated with flipping open a handset or standing near a cell tower. But among researchers who study the effects of electromagnetic emissions from mobile phones and towers, the prevailing wisdom is that it's too early to conclude that they are harmless to humans."

According to a Reuters article released December 20 2004, "Radio waves from mobile phones harm body cells and damage DNA in laboratory conditions, according to a new study majority-funded by the European Union, researchers said on Monday... After being exposed to electromagnetic fields that are typical for mobile phones, the cells showed a significant increase in single and double-strand DNA breaks. The damage could not always be repaired by the cell. DNA carries the genetic material of an organism and its different cells. 'There was remaining damage for future generation of cells,' said project leader Franz Adlkofer. This means the change had procreated. Mutated cells are seen as a possible cause of cancer...Adlkofer advised against the use of a mobile phone when an alternative fixed line phone was available, and recommended the use of a headset connected to a cellphone whenever possible."
