Clean Air Foundation's Real Life Solutions

The Clean Air Foundation is dedicated to developing, implementing, and managing public engagement programs and other strategic approaches that lead to measurable emission reductions while following a solid business model.

And that's why they've
taken it upon themselves to develop an impressive stable of public engagement programs over the last two years, which deliver a measurable improvement to air quality.

Car Heaven encourages Canadians to get their older, high-polluting cars off the road permanently. Since the program launch in July 2000, Car Heaven and its partners have retired and recycled over 8,000 vehicles and has numerous incentives to encourage Canadians take part including a free tow, charitable receipt and incetives such as bicycles, transit passes and a new low emission Ford Focus.

Mow Down Pollution encourages people to replace their old two stroke mowers and trimmers with cleaner alternatives. In 2003 Mow Down Pollution retired over 3000 old gas lawnmowers. (Sort of reminds me of an ecosmith t-shirt design I saw the other day)

Keep Cool: By offering incentives, Keep Cool entices people to replace their old, inefficient room air conditioners with new ENERGY STAR qualified units. This program can help reduce electricity consumption during peak demand times. Keep Cool was run at 23 retail locations in both Ontario and Quebec in 2003, with over 350 RACs retired - and it's back again this summer!

Switch Out works with over 200 automobile recyclers across Canada to collect highly-toxic mercury switches from end-of-life vehicles. This program is the largest of its kind in North America, targeting the 16 million mercury switches on the road today. In 2002 Switch Out removed close to 24,000 switches or 24 Kg of mercury from old vehicles.
