Climate 'Key to African Future'
As G8 leaders prepare to meet in Scotland, and as music fans prepare to enjoy the world-wide Live 8 music festival, the looming topic at hand is Africa.
A recent report by the The Working Group on Climate Change and Development says that efforts to alleviate poverty in Africa will fail unless urgent action is taken to halt climate change. The continue on to state G8 nations have so far failed to “join the dots” between climate change and Africa.
A recent BBC piece details the group’s goals: 1. Rich countries to go far beyond their Kyoto Protocol targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. 2. An end to the exploitation of fossil fuels in Africa and help for local people to utilise sustainable and renewable energy. 3. Increased support for small-scale agriculture. 4. A flexible development approach to respond to climate change at a local level.
