Just A Friendly Reminder

We have probably talked about backyard composting and composters a few dozen times on Greenthinkers. We are talking about them again just a simple reminder to everyone to compost their kitchen scraps!

In my backyard I have one of the Envirocycle models.

I live in the 'burbs where there isn't a green bin program like they have in Toronto so the Envirocycle is an excellent a better option!

A backyard composter allows you to compost at source. (Don't get me wrong, the green bin program is excellent -- especially for apartment dwellers.)

I know fellow Greenthinker Nathan uses the green bin in the city. Perhaps he has some interesting green bin tales...

So enjoy the summer and be sure to compost!

  • I do live in the city and I do use the green bin! It is a wonderful program - it has reduced my household garbage output to virtually nothing. Plus, the clever design keeps the green bin raccoon-proof!

And the difference in the amount of garbage left for the garbage trucks on my street on garbage day every second week is astounding (the city has reduced garbage pick-up from every week to every second week because there is so little garbage to pick up!).

I am looking forward to acquiring an Envirocycle Composter and a Raincatcher 4000 Rain Barrel from Envirolet this summer, nonetheless.

That way, I can compost at source and reap the rewards in my own garden while still green binning things that I don't feel like composting (some meats, paper towels, diapers, etc.).
