International Coastal Cleanup

Come one, come all: Volunteers from around the globe and the U.S. states and territories participate each year, clearing tons of trash from coastlines, rivers and lakes. And it's coming up soon.

And for a look at a more local (Canadian, in this case) site devoted to this event, try this one.

Each September, hundreds of thousands of volunteers from around the world join forces during the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) coordinated by the Ocean Conservancy. In the past 17 years, more than 4.5 million volunteers from 120 countries have participated.

This is one environmental program that everyone can get involved with. It is the perfect opportunity for school groups, community groups, and families concerned individuals to get involved in a hands-on conservation program. It provides a chance to become involved with an activity that has a real, measurable effect in the environment both locally and globally. Cleanups are more than just collecting trash, they are examples of communities working together to create solutions that ensure our oceans and waterways are kept clean.

  • And as a smart aside, in the Canadian version participants will not just be collecting trash from local shorelines, they will also be collecting important data.

With every cleanup, volunteers fill out an International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) data card. Every piece of garbage collected is recorded, sent back to the Vancouver Aquarium, and is tabulated. As an example, in 2003, over 150,000 cigarette butts were picked and recorded across Canada. This data forwarded to the ICC, where it is used to affect legislation about aquatic debris.

  • That's quite a few butts. Gross.

The data collection is unique but a great idea.

  • We've all heard the rave about hybrid cars.I have an idea which makes them old news.I have the fullproof plans for a car that runs on gasoline that will go 70MPH and get 200 miles per gallon. Can a hybrid do that?If someome is willing to back me,or if the oil company wants to buy the plans from me,that is fine too.But I do care about saving us all some cash. And my plan WILL work.Im just average Joe Public.
