Sugar Batteries? ...Sugar Batteries!

According to recent reports (it’s all over the internet at the moment), researchers at the University of St. Louis have developed a battery that boasts the ability to extract energy from virtually any sugar source to power portable electronics like cellular phones, laptops, and sensors. The new technology would thus be biodegradable - a greener and more environmentally efficient option to the current choices.
As Engadget writes, the current proof of this ability is a postage stamp-sized fuel cell which can power a portable calculator. It has been suggested that this new cell could be commercialized within 5 years, if all goes according to plan.
