Jeers To The Oral-B Hummingbird

oralbhummingbird_photo.jpg

The Hummingbird from Oral-B is a battery-powered flossing device that vibrates when you push a button. The vibrations are said to gently massage your gums while the flosser dislodges all the bad stuff between your teeth.

We now turn this post over to the wonderful ladies at The Shopping Bags for their comments:

The Oral-B Hummingbird will set you back $9.99 (Canadian) and comes with 3 single-use flossing heads and 5 toothpicks – after those are done you’ll need to purchase replacement heads…We had a dental hygienist who spends most of her day flossing teeth to give the Hummingbird a try – her opinion: it didn’t make flossing any easier and it actually gave you less control than with regular floss. The vibrations didn’t seem to add any real benefit to the flosser or provide a gum massage either, it was more of a gimmick than anything.

Sure, we’ve read the odd blog post where people describe their unhealthy addiction to this product, but we here at GT have to say, as each replacement pack costs another 5 bucks and comes with another big batch of plastic packaging, we have to give this thing the thumbs down. And furthermore, get this, according to the Shopping Bags experts, 180 meters of regular floss should give you about 400 flossings at a cost of roughly a few dollars. To get the same number of flossings with the Hummingbird it’ll cost you over CA$660 in replacement packs.

And so it must come as no surprise that the Oral-B Hummingbird gets our first Jeers award.
