Big Blue Goes Green

According to MSNBC, IBM has pledged to invest $1 billion a year on ‘green’ projects while also doubling the energy efficiency of its big computer systems by 2010.

This comes on the heels of other big corporations making that leap - Citigroup, GM and News Corp have all made similar pronouncements in recent past.

IBM’s move is expected to save $500 million over the next three years, meaning their bottom line and the environment are winning here.

IBM will promise to double the computing capacity of its data centres, which take up 8m sq ft in hundreds of locations around the world, within three years without increasing their power consumption. The company estimates the initiative would help save 5bn kilowatt energy hours per year – enough to heat 370,000 homes for one winter, according to experts.
