"Evan Almighty" Buys Carbon Offsets
“Evan Almighty” — which stars Steve Carell as Evan Baxter, a man anointed by God to build an ark — is a movie about learning to respect the planet, according to director Tom Shadyac. And during the making of the film, Shadyac was determined to see that the cast and crew lived by that same theme.
For a movie, this is not a small undertaking. While the average American is responsible for emitting 40,000 pounds of CO2 annually, the Conservation Fund calculated that “Evan Almighty” would emit 5.2 million pounds of CO2. But Shadyac and Universal Pictures conferred with the Washington, D.C.–based Conservation Fund and resolved to make the entire production carbon neutral.

What did they do? They planted over 2000 trees to counter the carbon emissions from the filming. Plus, they did some other eco-things on set like use recycled materials for the craft service and print scripts on both sides.
