GT World Watch: Smuggled Alcohol Turned Into Fuel
It’s time once again for GT World Watch - our look at the green news that is a bit out there and may have been missed by your local news reports. Today, smugglers in Sweden trying to sneak alcohol into the country are unwittingly helping fuel the country’s public transport system and reducing its greenhouse emissions.
That’s right, according to AP via IHT, almost all of the 700,000 liters of smuggled alcohol seized by the Swedish customs service last year was turned into alternative fuel and used to power buses, trucks and a biogas train.
And interestingly enough, the article notes, even back in 2003, about one-quarter of the energy consumed in the small Nordic country came from renewable sources — more than four times as much as the European Union average of 6 percent, according to EU statistics. In Stockholm, 1/4 of city buses run on ethanol or biogas.
