Frankfurt Auto Show: Porsche Cayenne Hybrid

Our coverage f the Frankfurt Auto Show continues this week.

Not to be outdone by all this emphasis from German automakers on green technology, even Porsche is bringing out a gasoline-electric hybrid. Theirs is a version of its Cayenne SUV that is expected to get 25% better fuel economy than the non-hybrid. It’s also expected to be able to cruise under electric power alone at speeds of up to 70 miles per hour.

Porsche says its goal for this mixed-power version of the Cayenne is an average fuel consumption rating of 9.8 L/100 km. That’s almost as good as the 10.8 L/100 km highway rating for a 2007 Cayenne V6. Even more significant is that the Cayenne Hybrid’s drivetrain is designed to provide better acceleration than a conventional Cayenne…There are a number of other fuel-saving technologies at work here, too, all designed to reduce mechanical drag on the gas engine. Porsche says the hybrid prototype uses electric motors to run the hydraulic power steering pump and to generate vacuum for the power brakes, as well as the air conditioning. As well, the oil pump in the Cayenne’s automatic transmission was replaced by an electric one. Porsche says preserving the hydraulic power-steering system will allow the Cayenne Hybrid to deliver the kind of “predictable and safe handling characteristics expected of a Porsche.”

We an expect to see this hit the streets nearer to the end of the decade.
