From the BBC comes word that French President Nicolas Sarkozy has called for several new measures in his nation’s fight against climate change.

These measures include…

• Taxes to target polluters.

• Halve the use of pesticides.

• Suspend the commercial planting of genetically-modified (GM) crops until further testing is carried out.

• Total transparency on environmental issues, including nuclear energy.

• Freeze the building of new motorways and airports to try to tackle pollution from transport, which is responsible for at least quarter of French CO2 gas emissions.

• More investment in the French rail network to try to shift freight traffic away from the roads.
