Hybrids And The Push For Aluminum

The Aluminum Association released a study recently today that demonstrates the environmental and economical advantages of using aluminum (extremely lightweight compared to steel) in vehicles with advanced powertrains (more specifically hybrids and diesels).
The idea is that by taking some weight out of the vehicle by using aluminum instead of steel, automakers can make smaller and lighter hybrid/diesel engines. According to the study (again, released by the Aluminum Association), the estimated fuel savings offset the initial additional cost of the more expensive engine/powertrain within one to four years. This is quite a bit quicker than what consumers are currently experiencing.
Interesting stuff.
