What’s more, the company’s trade with KOOFA helps to empower women who are often supporting their family on their own due to migration and AIDS-related deaths. Through membership in the co-op (which is 50% female), women farmers gain better control of their own income and are trained on the skills of production and introduction of new crops. The women are also involved in management, providing them with a much needed leadership role and increasing their self-esteem and self-reliance.
