Cono Sur's Carbon Neutral Wine

For clarity’s sake, an organic wine is basically a wine made from organically grown grapes, meaning they were farmed and harvested entirely without the use of man-made chemicals, whether in the form of fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, insecticides or fungicides.
In 1999 Cono Sur began its organic viticulture project with 40 hectares of Chimbarongo vineyards, in the Colchagua Valley. In 2003, after the necessary 3 year transition period, they produced their first wine – a Cabernet Sauvignon / Carmenere – made from organically grown grapes, certified by BCS Oeko Garantie GMBH Germany. Since then 210 more hectares of different varieties have been added to the organic program.
At Cono Sur they like doing things the natural way. And that was displayed in 2007 when they became the first winery in the world to obtain CarbonNeutral delivery status. This means that the CO2 emissions from the shipping of their products have been measured and balanced to net zero through greenhouse gas emissions reduction projects.
Plus, they have a bicycle on their labels for good reason. Amongst the vines at the winery, lots of bicycles can be found, resting against walls and propped up on the end of rows of vines. It’s the way their workers move around the vineyards every day. Now that’s walking the walk. Or riding the ride. Whatever.
And yes, it’s a tasty Pinot Noir, too.
